I changed the filenames to filename without extension, and - I hardly cant believe it - it really works now!

I already told you what you heeded to do: either install that mod or rename the files to remove the .321 from the attachment file names.

So you changed the code, or installed a mod that changed the code, since .321 is not standard SMF extension on files. SMF 2.0 does not have any extension, drop the .321 off the end of the file name and it would work again. Or reinstall whatever changes...
