Description is a varchar(255) in the database. If you want bigger descriptions, this column needs to be increased, as well as the input field.

Not really sure about the consequences, though. Never really looked at that code, but I guess it won't.

Actually, unless I am mistaken, it can't be database related because the fields already contains the text. It is just that it is not displayed.
