OK, so the first place to look is in the database, specifically the smf_members table. You'll need to look at that table in phpMyAdmin or similar, and look up the collation against the member_name and real_name columns of that table.

Attached here is a snapshot of the members list.

You can see that capitals get priority we go A-Z then a-z.
