My normal method to back up my database is using the export feature in phpMyAdmin. For the past 4 days now, When I try to do one, my download speeds start out at around 150k (normal from them). But then they drop down all the way to 0, go back up, drop back down, etc. The download ends up timing out and I only get half of the download. (note.. gzipped my download should be around 81.2mb).
I complained to the host. Their 1st excuse was my ISP. After I ran a speed test and showed them I can download upwards of 7MB per second, they changed their story and said that downloading directly to my pc does not always work and that I should be generating a full backup using the Backups feature. Well as I explained to them, this wont work either. I don't need a full backup, I download my pub html folder through FTP and only when I need to (theme or mod updates, etc). There is no sense is downloading that every single time if the one I have is fine.
Now, with this all being said, I know that there is an option to download just the database using the Backups feature. Which brings me to my question.
When I do it using the export feature, I leave all settings as is, adding one additional item. When I was shown how to do all this, I was told to check this option because if I don't, I wouldn't be able to restore.
When downloading the db through the Backups feature, you have no options, it just downloads. Is it downloading in the right format? Will I be able to use these to restore with if needed? Am I getting the entire database? (I ask the latter because I just tried one, and it is 6mb smaller than my last known good backup and nothing has been deleted from the site, etc).
Edit: This is why I don't do full backups every single time. They are way too big and the majority of this is the pub html folder - of which I don't need unless changes are made to themes, etc.
