I am a not very experienced computer user, primarily with Windows background. I get very confused by the file permissions needed by SMF. In the process of upgrading to 2.0.8 just now, for the first time (when upgrading), I had to change permissions on several files to allow the upgrade to proceed. Generally this seemed to require chmod 777.
I see in the useful hints following the Avast hack, we are advised to use 644/755 with the proviso that even this is not actually secure. Would it be possible to offer some more detailed guidance on this for folks such as me? For example, when should I use 644? When 755? Should I leave any at 777? What would be more secure settings that still allow use of the board?
Any assistance would be gratefully received...
