There is a bridge for Joomla that does work....just can't think of it now. You need to play with it a bit to get it to work though. As long as the database extensions for Joomla and SMF are different, they can use the same database. They could also be installed in different DB's but that is really your choice.
No bridge = 2 databases
bridge = 1 database.
That's the way I would do it anyway.
